’nuff said

ok, suppose this fire resembled an authentic, genuine, rock-on walk with the Lord — and this little fire is the ever-popular Sunday flame.

you know it quite well: it’s the flame that only ignites on Sunday morning when the pastor throws a few logs on it and come Sunday evening, Monday morning tops, a small pile of ash remains.

now take another look — there’s no other fuel but sand and water.  yeah, it’s a bummer.  all excited because of a good sermon, but not willing to apply anything.  i feel like this sometimes.

it’s like dating someone you kinda like and going through the motions… no real flame, just a little bonfire… but seriously… when you really love this person… how far are you willing to go…

no, not just smoke, i mean, seriously, really loved this person that it overwhelmed you… what would it look like?

and you couldn’t contain it…

while bonfires are plenty, these fires are no-joke… they make headlines.  there’s no formula to get there…
go figure — God actually might have made this entire thing un-complicated — dare i even say, simple.  just like that hot fiery romance, sub the passion for a True passion.

a small flame is already within you and while Christians have tried throwing other random fuels upon it (drama, acceptance, lust, money, etc…), it’s still only a short-lived flame.  but then you remember when you pursued Him just the same way you pursued that long lost bride (no formulas, but just because you wanted to) — and somehow you remember watching that flame really ignite.  how could you have forgotten?  it’s a real fuel that creates a real flame, and like paul even said: you have to take up that cross daily.  good call, paul… sounds just like a beautiful love story.

point and case: you are what you spend your time doing.  what you spend your time doing is what you worship.  what you worship, outside from the Lord, is your idol.

sure — some people could probably get by with just their bonfire and idols, doing their thing, and still probably get right through to heaven, but as for me… i want more… because He’s worthy.
man — i had to skip oatmeal for this post.

  2. YES!! He played his guitar like that for the entire show…amazing!!!! And during the last song he played with such passion that one by one every string on the bow snapped, and at the end the bow itself broke in half! He still used the broken and destroyed bow to play by hitting it against the guitar strings…amazing!!!!

  3. hey, I love to think, great post.

Though (oh my gosh, theological debate) it says in the Word “Let all who name the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” and that many enter in at the wide gate (a very grounded preacher I heard spoke on this, he said how could they be ‘sinners’ in the world if they’re entering a gate.  Sinners just go wherever they want.) and many shall say in that day “Lord, Lord but we prophesied, did miracles, and many mighty works in Your Name!”  Too which He will reply, “Depart from me, I never knew you, you worker of lawlessness.”

I don’t think the unregenerated heart that can break the first four commandments week after week after week (with a seared and uncaring conscience) have found the strait gate.

Sorry, this has been too long.

Mr.  Herrera, I respect and salute you.  And I am with you on the bonfire issue, it is disgusting.  My thought is “stoney ground hearers”, because they do spring up and recieve the Word with joy and gladness but never had their roots set in the Law.  (parable of the sower and the seed)

Your thoughts?  Let me know as I would enjoy them immensely.

  5. Miss you Erik, The Lord did always bless you with the right analagy at the right time whenever we would talk. I needed to read that. Yet I still feel as if I don’t know what to do… Or that I want to do it… Or that I will go do what ever it is that I need to do. AAAHHHHHH… Things get so crazy sometimes…

  6. I can go to school for free with a moderately high GPA to a state school in CT. I haven’t been accepted to the program yet, but I’m scheckin it out. I like the sail boat in your last post! Boating is a hobby of mine and one thing I will definately have in my house when I get older in a model sail boat in my bedroom window! My brother and I are actually building a little boat to cruise the Mystic River in.
